Brisbane’s Glitter Records was recently highlighted on 612 ABC Brisbane Mornings with Steve Austin. Appearing live on air on April 11, owner Riley Fitzgerald spoke about the resurgence of vinyl in the digital age. He also discussed the evolving culture of record collecting.

The Unique Sound and Appeal of Physical Media

The segment opened with the crackling sound of a dirty stylus on an unclean LP. This set the scene for a conversation about the tactile charm of physical formats. Riley explained how records, CDs, and cassettes provide a unique listening experience. One that streaming cannot replicate. He noted that rather than diminishing in relevance, many analog recordings have only grown more sought after in the digital era.

Brisbane’s Rare Punk Records and Music Heritage

The pair then discussed the rarity of vinyl releases by Brisbane punk bands, including 1970s acts such as Just Urbain, Razar, Young Identities, and The Leftovers. Many of these records were pressed in limited quantities, making them prized finds for collectors today. Steve Austin shared his admiration for another Australian punk band, Spike, as well as David Sylvian, linking their work to the resurgence of physical media.

Record Store Day and the Future of Vinyl

With Record Store Day approaching on April 12, 2025, Riley spoke about the unique role of record stores operating in both digital and bricks-and-mortar mediums. Riley and Steve also discussed how the digital era has sparked a new wave of collectors. Riley noted that people of all ages visit record stores such as Glitter Records. He shared that he thinks many do so for the experience of holding and listening to physical music formats. He emphasized that independent record stores play a vital role in preserving music history and fostering a strong community among collectors.
