Glitter Records: From Australia’s Smallest Record Shop to Digital Vinyl Powerhouse

Two years ago, Glitter Records was just a small shop in Fortitude Valley. Today, it is Australia’s largest seller on Discogs, with over 25,880 items for sale. Founder Riley Fitzgerald sees his store as more than a business. He aims to redefine what a modern record store can be.
A Philosophy of Discovery
From the start, Fitzgerald treated music as more than a product, making Glitter Records a haven for collectors searching for rare, interesting, and overlooked sound recordings. The store rejects trends in favor of an eclectic and curated catalog.
The Record Exchange Legacy
A major turning point came with Glitter Records’ purchase of part of Brisbane’s iconic Record Exchange collection late last year. Known for its eclectic inventory and colorful owner, the Record Exchange was a cultural landmark for many decades. Several private collections, rare shellac donations, and Fitzgerald’s own finds have further aided in the rapid creation of one of Australia’s most distinctive and diverse music catalogs.
Glitter Records Offers A Diverse Range of Formats
The store stocks a wide range of formats. CDs dominate the online catalog with over 17,000 titles available. Vinyl remains a centerpiece of Riley’s physical store, with nearly 6,000 records spanning genres like classic rock, jazz, Japanese city pop and experimental music. The growing online store also offers 1,500 shellac records, providing a glimpse into early 20th-century music. Cassettes, some 1,080, and DVDs, 301, add even more variety.
Scaling Online With A Personal Touch
As online sales grow, Riley, the sole operator of his business, faces many challenges. Mailing up to 100 CDs daily—plus vinyl and other formats—has required a crash course in warehouse logistics. Yet, the shop itself remains the soul of the business. “I think there is still a place in the world for the modern record store,” Fitzgerald says. “The longer the shop stays in California Lane, the more it becomes part of the community and people’s lives. It’s a space where I can set a good example, share knowledge, and encourage others.”
Making Glitter Records A Cultural Hub for the Future
Despite its growth, the store remains fiercely independent. It focuses on curation, not commercial trends. More than a store, it is a hub where music, people, and ideas meet. Glitter Records is reshaping how music is discovered and experienced in Australia.
