“Was about to post the Spotify thing,” Tame Impala’s Kevin Parker writes via Tame Impala‘s Instagram, “but this email to my manager seems more relevant.”
His post displays an email from Tame headquarters informing Kevin that, by their estimation, Lonerism‘s ‘Feels Like We Only Go Backwards‘ and Currents opener ‘Let It Happen‘ now qualify for Gold Record status.
By the Recording Industry Association of America’s standards, this means the singles have moved 500,000 ‘units’, meaning “total units sold, streamed, or shipped to retailers”.
Streams are weighted less than a traditional physical sale, with 1,500 song or video streams equalling one physical sale.
More important still is that ‘The Less I Know The Better‘, Currents‘ most popular single, has hit Platinum on account of recently going viral on social media platform Tik Tok.
(And furthermore, is predicted to reach Double Platinum status in the next month or so!)
This means the song has moved no less than a staggering one million units.
On Spotify alone, the song has been streamed 424 million times.
The singles are yet to be officially certified – a process that takes some time – but management is currently in the process of doing so.
The news could not have come at a better time for Tame Impala fans.
Recent single ‘Posthumous Forgiveness‘ receiving widespread praise and long-awaited fourth album The Slow Rush due to arrive February 14.
