Pink Floyd have released an alternate version of ‘Money’.

The early mix was originally available on 2011’s The Dark Side of the Moon Immersion boxed set.

It now arrives as the latest in a series of rarities Pink Floyd have shared as part of their Syd, Roger, Richard, Nick, and David Spotify playlist.

During this period of lockdown, isolation, and uncertainty,” Pink Floyd writes via Facebook, “it might help to make time each day to immerse yourself in music, so each day we will be adding a new track into the playlist that you can find at the top of the band’s Spotify page, if you choose that particular streaming service for this.”

Each day,” the statement continues, “this will build into the perfect playlist to help you navigate these challenging times. From the best known classics, to deeper album tracks, you’ll find each day’s new track at the top of the playlist. As a bonus, each Friday we will be adding one of the currently unavailable bonus tracks that were featured in the Immersion boxsets a few years back.”

Originally appearing on 1973’s The Dark Side of the Moon, ‘Money’ would also become one of Pink Floyd’s best-known singles.

While David Gilmour provided vocals, it was Roger Waters who conceived the song’s lyrics and iconic bass riff.

Roger came in with the verses and lyrics for ‘Money’ more or less completed,” Gilmour informed Guitar World in 1993. “And we just made up middle sections, guitar solos and all that stuff. We also invented some new riffs – we created a 4/4 progression for the guitar solo and made the poor saxophone player play in 7/4. It was my idea to break down and become dry and empty for the second chorus of the solo.”

Roger and I constructed the tape loop for ‘Money’ in our home studios,” Pink Floyd drummer Nick Mason shared of the song in biography Inside Out.”I had drilled holes in old pennies and then threaded them on to strings… Roger had recorded coins swirling around in the mixing bowl [wife] Judy used for her pottery, the tearing paper effect was created very simply in front of the microphone and [Abbey Road’s] faithful sound library provided the cash registers.
