Given that The Flaming LipsWayne Coyne dresses in all-white when he performers and regularly professes his love for the Fab Four, it doesn’t take to much of a stretch to guess that his Beatles‘ The White Album is his favorite record.

In a new interview with Under the Radar Magazine Coyne shares what it is that makes the Beatles ninth album so special to him.

My older brothers and I loved it growing up,” he shares.

Coyne first recalls hearing the album, which he describes as a “big combination of such an extreme of stuff that you can like, hate or be freaked out by”,  in 1969.

Some of that music is haunting,” he informs Under The Radar, “it’s beautiful, and it’s strange, and it’s happy, and it’s sad, and it’s f****d up, it’s all the stuff.

I think it’s probably a magic opening in your subconscious,” he continues. “When you reach that you have access to these melodic memories that are attached to your emotions and stuff. I think I’m always hoping to trigger that.”

In a 2014 interview with Rolling Stone Coyne also shared a few more of his thoughts on the Fab Four.

John Lennon is just a motherf***er,” he stated. “He does things that sound really simple, and he has this attitude where you know it’s not about playing and perfection, it’s about feeling. But it’s not simple at all.”

Paul McCartney’s compositions,” he then added, “they have a lot of storytelling, they have this kind of emotional arc. You can think, ‘That shit’s sophisticated, I can’t fuck with that.’ But the John Lennon ones can trick you into thinking that they’re simple. And then you get in there and he’s fucking weird as fuck.’

Coyne also rerecorded the White album’s predecessor Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band in 2014.

Titled With a Little Help from My Fwend the record featured several collaborators including Miley Cryus, Foxygen, and J. Mascis.
