Consequence of Sound Has Ranked Tame Impala’s ‘Currents’ Amongst Top 100 Albums Of The 2010s

As the end of decade lists keep rolling in, Tame Impala has come in at the top of yet another.

This time around its music website’s Consequence of Sound’s Top 100 Albums of the 2010s.

Coming in between Kanye West’s Yeezuz at #12 and Janelle Monáe’s Dirty Computer at #14, Tame Impala has found a place for itself at #13 with third album Currents.

Australian music project Tame Impala had always been great at dragging direct rock lyrics over new ambient territories,” Consequence’s Erica Campbell writes of the 2015 album. “Currents upped the ante, though, giving leader Kevin Parker the space to share how polished and profound his talent and expertise were not only as a producer, but as a songwriter and vocalist, as well.”

Hearkening back to ’80s sentimentality and ’60s psychedelic rock,” Campbell continues, “each of the 13 songs sound like standalone experiments. Yet the entire sentiment of Currents can be captured in the opening lyrics of lead single ‘Let it Happen’, as Parker evenly recants, ‘It’s always around me, all this noise/ But not nearly as loud as the voice saying/ Let it happen, let it happen.’ We’re glad he did.

The decision to rank Tame’s most pop-leaning album is an interesting one given other lists from Pitchfork and Discogs rated it below 2012’s Lonerism.

Rihanna’s 2016 album Anti, which contained a cover of Tame Impala’s ‘New Person, Same Old Mistakes’ also appeared on the list at #81.

Beyonce’s Lemonade took the #1 place.

You can run your eyes across the full list here and, as avid fans no doubt already know, Tame Impala’s fourth album The Slow Rush will be arriving February 14, 2020.
